It's been a while since a CD dropped through my letter box and when I saw a Finnish postage mark it could only have come from one person - Proteus. This CD is billed as an album to bring out and respect different genres of harder underground dance music, mixed live by Harri with traditional DJ kit. In his own words, "the album is based on the musical content and not about showing the newest technical tricks".
So what do you get? It's a big dangerous fairground ride full of theatre with tracks featuring big anthemic driving trance riffs to filthy dubstep, NRG and hard as nails hardcore. Now I'm getting on a bit and slowing down in my old age but it's didn't stop me listening all the way through. It somehow manages to feel fresh, something in my opinion a lot of the harder styles have singularly failed to do. It keep you wondering what'll come next and yet it's distinctly Proteus, with a dark and slightly disturbing underlying trend which really does bring out your dark side. Production is as you'd expect top notch and the mixing bang on with some nice intro's and track links.
This shows Proteus really is still at the top of his game and if you're in the market for something to blow out the cobwebs you probably won't do better than this.
As side note there are a couple of tracks from Proteus's new project Skylight which I can confirm sound really promising so I'm looking forward to hearing more in this direction.
