Cathar

» First Contact EP

Reviewed by Andy Force / Submitted 08-12-11 16:18

Label: Free Spirit Records
Format: Digital
Genre: Psychedelic Trance

Having recently arrived on the circuit, new signing to Free Spirit Records "Cathar" have let loose their debut EP, but don't be fooled, their relatively unknown status isn't going to last long, "First Contact" is an EP of phenomenal callibre for production quality and originality.

Blending a gritty and groovy UK morning sound with nu skool goa style melodies, each track's percussion has an organic feel with distinctive snares and relentless bassline perfectly fused to create a colossal dancefloor impact. With a powerful grasp of timbre, Cathar have masterfully composed each piece with genuine musicality, from the gentle rolls and wispy trance of "By Dawns Early Light" to the edgy acid mayhem in "Rise of the Machines. Pleasingly, their morning formula has little time for breakdowns, dragging you along on an undercurrent of quirky, original acid synths and stabs before swelling to a tsunami of melodies that are impossible not to surf.

A hugely refreshing take on the UK sound and an encouraging injection of creativity into the psychedelic landscape, I can't wait to see the album when it's ready. Well spotted Free Spirit.
