When I was asked to be a reviewer of hard dance on HF I was chuffed, but when the first EP to review is Scott Attrill’s Mega EP 2, I was jumping for joy. A double header of More Powerand Twister
Straight from the get go More Power has a vocal that pretty much everyone and probably even your Dad will recognise. But don’t be fooled by this hat tip to the classic Snap track, this is pure tech trance, hard dance cross over brilliance from Scott. A man who has been leading this emerging scene. Cool techno influences drives More Power along to a masterful breakdown. I’m always a sucker for anything a bit quirky and the vocal stab introducing a brilliantly weird wind down. Then we are hit with a main riff that has a real old trancey feel to it. The hypnotic beat kicks back in and its pure bum shaking action. For lovers of hard trance, tech trance cross over stuff this is a great track. But its stripped back approach probably wont quite make it the tune of the night, but its not the sort of track that’s going to make people wander off for a bottle of water or sit down. However all good dj’s know we can't fill a night with all killers, we need the odd filler.
However if we want to talk about killer tracks then Scott delivers with Twister. Leaning a little more to the tech trance end of things, its got a wonderful array of twisted (see what I did there!?) incidental noises with a wicked computer game like feel. Plus a bassline line that screams GET ON THE DANCEFLOOR! But what really got me excited is the little piano stab in the build up and Mr Attrill doesn’t just tease. The breakdown is a really techy influenced affair but gets propelled to the next level once that piano kicks in again. It makes me think back to tracks like Awesome 3 Don’t Go, when pianos where all we needed. The simple piano riff is mashed to pieces, before we drop to a full on audio trickery assault. Continuing to use the piano riff, this for me is what merging the lines between tech trance and hard dance is all about. Enough dirty bassline action coupled with a piano that should be cheesier than the Dairylee factory, yet it works and darn well!
Overall for the EP as a whole I’d go for a 7/10. More Power for me is a solid tune, but not the sort of track people will be talking about the morning after the night before. However I can well imagine Twisted getting a fair few tongues wagging.
