Let’s face it, Basic is probably not the best name for a psy trance act. I think we all know that by it’s very nature, psy trance is far from basic. Luckily, then that the rather stunning music on this great little album doesn’t manage to live up to the production pseudonym of the producers that wrote it…
Hailing from northern Israel, Basic are the production duo of Benny Risher and Shahar Fahima. This is their first album together, although in the short while they’ve been producing together they have already been notching up single releases on various compilation albums on labels including BNE, Sirius and Psytropic. The album sits firmly in the full-on camp but manages to capture some of the essence and depth of the slightly slower sounding progressive style grooves as well. The production (like that of most of their Israeli counterparts) is bright and clean with tracks combining crisp percussion, groovy, tough, yet playful basslines and big, bright, atmospheric melodies that transcend beautifully between airy light textures to dark, menacing riffs. There is a clever use of suspense throughout the album, building tracks up slowly until they reach a giant climax where all hell breaks loose. Additionally, the use of vocal samples is also done well, yet at times not particularly to my taste. The opening ragga style lyrics on “Wicked” sound a touch like a bit of a cliché and like something Wrecked Machines have already done.
In short, Basic have managed to create their own distinct sound with this album, which is always a notable achievement. Admittedly there are a couple of tracks that I’m not too keen on, however, the overall album is definitely a sure-fire winner.
