When this dropped through my door, I was looking forward to hearing what Simon Berry AKA Art of Trance had been up to. A fair number of Platipus tunes have been valued records in my bag over the years and I would certainly trust the label to provide some quality tuneage. The blurb that came with the CD promised a more mature, grown up sound, slower more refined BPMs with the usual ‘deep’ vibe. So what have we got?
CD1 is a 125 bpm deep progressive trancer and didn’t really appeal to me. Don’t get me wrong, there’s some fine tracks on there – Vorontsov’s ‘Say Breathe’, Extrawelt’s ‘Soopertrack, Chab feat. JDDavis ‘Closer to Me’ and Kosmas’s ‘Epsilon’ were all dirty enough to get my attention, but it just wasn’t enough. I listened in the car during the day, on the way out clubbing, on the way home from clubbing and after the crack on – aha then it appealed. When my ears had been battered for a couple of days with 140 – 150 bpm trance and hard trance, they needed soothing and it was there that this cd found it’s niche. Music for tired ears, neighbour friendly music to play in the garden or background music at a dinner party. That’s when I would appreciate it.
CD2 was more the type of trance I enjoy. With an uplifting dreamy start from Re:locate’s ‘Distant Heartache’, 138bpm was more of a pace to get me dancing. Dirtier tunes E-Tronic’s ‘Glasshouse’, Holderman’s ‘Left Right Switch’ and Syntone’s ‘Cried Out’ are presented together with the excellent A Force feat Yahel ‘Behind Silence’, F Concept’s ‘Open Your Mind’ and Hemstock and Jennings’s ‘Babylon’. There is a great mix of trance on here, from dirty to dreamy, psy influenced to vocal and uplifting. I have already bought one of the tracks on here, and will be looking for three more.
